The Spirit of America

Bonneville Salt Flats, there are couple of guys fightin' it out to set the land speed record back in the by gone days. Craig Breedlove is one and that's his jet engined ride named The Spirit of America. He sets it and Art Arfons with his jet engined ride named The Green Monster breaks it or visa versa and this goes on for a while. Breedlove wrecks it and walks, well swims and then walks away.

Somebody or bodies is probably still doing it and I don't much care anymore. My motor head days are gone. I just want to turn the key and hope my car starts up.

After Breedlove decides to give it a rest and make a few bucks, he starts touring various drag strips and probably a few parking lot gigs. My Uncle Dave and my cousin Scott show up at one of these down New York City way and Uncle Dave not being of the shy type walks up to Mr Breedlove and says something to this effect, sooo, you think you've got a fast car do you. And Breedlove mumbled something, I have forgotten the exact words, but it was a yes and Uncle Dave says, I've got one that will beat it. I'll race you. I suppose you can imagine some unknown guy walking up to the one of the fastest men in the world on land and saying something like that and the resulting puzzled look that was on Breedlove's face. Breedlove says, what ya got. Yup, says Uncle Dave, I've got a Ford Falcon and I'll race you in reverse.
